my 1st impression of her is that she is a snob. On second observation I realize she is wizened and kind, but stern and no-nonsense.

Exactly!
This is loosely based on a supply teacher from public school, who only taught us for a few days but left a lasting impression. Very strict for sure.
Our regular teacher Mrs. Allen was also very strict, but we were glad to have her back!
